Card of the Week: Ace of Blades

Blades represent mental activity, intellect, thought and decision.  It is the suit of the deliberate mind and its rational abilities, capable of piercing distraction and illusion to arrive at truth.

The Ace of Blades suggests a particular need for great activity, mental clarity, focus and determination.  It could involve a key new idea or insight, the start of an ambitious large project, or just a new hobby.  It symbolizes the ability to cut through distractions, and discriminate between fantasy and reality.  It implies hope and optimism, progress and victory.

Inverted, this card warns of a major obstacle to your plans.  Whether from a permanent limitation or just a temporary pause, now may not be the best time for action.

In “The Naked Time” the Enterprise visits planet Psi 2000 to retrieve a science team previously stationed there to observe early stages of the planet’s breakup.  A landing party finds the science team dead, and inadvertently brings an unknown molecular agent back aboard the ship.  As the infection spreads through the crew, it strips their inhibitions and leads them to act out their every unrestrained thought, including Lieutenant Tormolen who commits suicide, Lieutenant Sulu whose fencing hobby becomes a swashbuckling rampage, and Lieutenant Riley who takes over the engineering deck and shuts down the ship’s engines.  Eventually Dr. McCoy finds a cure which is first tested on Sulu then distributed to the rest of the crew in time to let Mr. Scott retake the engineering deck and save the Enterprise from its decaying orbit.
